I have been told I have got hyperpigmentation of my skin, what does this mean?

This is a term used to describe sun spots, age and brown/ liver spots. Hyperpigmentaion is an over production of melanin, usually from cumulative over exposure to the sun. Ask the staff at smoothlines about their skin care range for hyperpigmentation.

What is melasma?

This is another type of hyperpigmentation. It can often be triggered by pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives or in some by the use of hormone replacement.  Facially, it can range from a freckle to all over discolouration.  Usually when women are in their forties, there is a chance that women can develop at least one or two sun spots which can occur on the hands, décolletage and the top of the feet.Sun protection can help protect against sun spots. It is never too late to start.  At smoothlines we offer a range of sun protection creams.

How can I get rid of existing sun spots?

There are safe creams available to treat age spots that exfoliate the top skin layers. Creams prescribed by smoothlines do not contain hydroquinone.  Ask the staff at smoothlines about our skin care package for age and sun spots, blotchy complexion and pigmentation.

Why is my skin sensitive?

Tiny cracks can occur on the surface of the skin which makes the skin more susceptible to irritants. The skin can become thinner due to damage from the sun and or ageing of the skin.  With the addition of dryness that occurs with ageing, the skin can become more sensitive as the skin barrier function is disrupted. Harsh cleansing and too much exfoliation can irritate the skin.  It is important to avoid aggressive skin care, limit exposure of any skin irritants and concentrate on protecting the skin from further damage. At smoothlines we can prescribe a sensitive skin care regimen to suit your needs.

Why is vitamin E contained in creams good for your skin?

Vitamin E is an anti oxidant that helps to fight sun damage and pollution.  It is known for its anti ageing effects and promoting a healthy looking skin when it is formulated in creams.

Can you recommend any creams that help repair the damage caused by UV light and pollution?

Balanced doses of vitamins A, C and E in creams can help repair the skin.  Such an enriched formula can help tighten tissues and strengthen your skin.  Your skin then becomes firmer and more elastic.  Smoothlines provide Re Nutriv ACE Lipoic complex containing these vitamins.  The cream activates the synthesis of collagen fibres, moisturise and fight against free radicals. It also helps repair the damage from sun and smoking.
